Redwings currently has over 700 horses and ponies in Guardian homes! By rehoming horses as ridden, unbacked projects and companions we are able to open our gates to more horses in need, and find perfect homes for those who don’t need to stay inside the sanctuary.
In our last We Love Rehoming blog we showcased Sue and Estelle and how they balance having fun with managing Estelle's PSSM (Polysaccharide Storage Myopathy). In this blog we want to introduce you to Jeanette and her cheeky rehomed pony Boris!
Boris came to Redwings as a youngster in 2012 after being rescued from a site in Wales. He was suffering from strangles, a highly infectious equine disease, but thankfully made a full recovery and was soon able to start his life at Redwings. Boris lived at our Ada Cole Visitor Centre while he grew up, and his loving and friendly nature led to him being considered for rehoming. Then, in August of 2022, he went home with his new Guardian Jeanette.
Jeanette had been looking for a companion pony, she told us; “We wanted a companion for our five-year-old cob Rupert, but I also wanted a pony for myself to take for walks and have fun with! We all love cobs, and the Redwings Rehoming team were very quick to match me with Boris. When I met him I fell in love!
“Boris is very cheeky, and when he first arrived he could be headstrong. But with time and patience we soon felt like we were forming a strong bond with him, which has allowed us to gain his trust. We gave him a daily routine of grooming, feeding, and spending time talking to him, and now we can do anything together! He is truly amazing, and we cuddle him so much we sometimes wonder if he gets fed up with us!”
Boris is well loved at his yard. Jeanette said; “Boris loves to go on walks as he is very nosey. He likes seeing what is going on around the yard and having other people stop to chat with him.
“He also loves to have a run around the indoor school, but we have to make sure we close the doors otherwise he’s off to visit the other ponies! We often have playtime where Boris works at liberty, does pole work, tries a small jump and learns tricks. He also stars in our family calendars made by my daughter, posing and dressing up for the seasons.
“Boris is a huge part of our family - both the humans and Rupert the cob love having him around! He also has such a special bond with my son, they hug and chat together often.”
As you might have picked up from Jeanette, Boris is quite the cheeky boy! Some of his finest moments include; “Boris is very fond of pinching people’s hats! You also can’t leave a bag near him as he will pick it up and empty it! He’s very clever and loves learning tricks such as giving fist bumps.
“When we take him for walks he often whinnies very loudly to all the other horses he sees. One of his favourite activities is going blackberry picking and he knows where all the best spots are!
“Boris is also very good at giving kisses and is very generous with them, his tongue tends to get everywhere which can be messy!”
Rehoming with Redwings
When you choose to rehome a rescue horse, you aren’t only helping your new friend! You are also giving your own horse a much needed companion, and creating space in the sanctuary for the next horse in need.
Experienced Guardians like Jeanette offer our rescued residents the chance to be treasured family members. Due to their rescued backgrounds, they may need time and patience to settle into their home, but with kindness and understanding, such as that shown by Jeanette and her family, they soon flourish.
Jeanette told us: “We have enjoyed being a Redwings Guardian. We love Boris so much, and we love sending updates about his antics to the Rehoming team. It’s great knowing we will always have the Redwings team there for support if we need it.”
