“We call them dumb animals, and so they are, for they cannot tell us how they feel, but they do not suffer less because they have no words.”
Anna Sewell, Black Beauty
The story behind the pledge
Redwings Horse Sanctuary, in partnership with the University of East Anglia, is excited to launch The Black Beauty Pledge, a special initiative inspiring children to stand up for animal welfare.
What is the Black Beauty Pledge?
In 1875, young people all over the world joined the Bands of Mercy. These groups encouraged children to stand up for animals, challenge cruelty and spread compassion. They showed that even at a young age, you can be a leader for change.
Just two years later, Anna Sewell’s famous book Black Beauty was published. Its story opened people’s eyes to the suffering of horses and inspired a new wave of concern for animal welfare.
The Black Beauty Pledge brings this history into the present. It challenges today’s generation to carry that same spirit forward – proving that small, everyday choices can shape a kinder world.
By taking the pledge, you will:
- Speak out when you see animals treated unfairly
- Take responsibility for the pets and wildlife around you
- Protect the environment we all share
- Encourage others to join the movement
Now it's YOUR turn to carry on their mission
Together we can build on the legacy of Black Beauty and continue to change how the world treats animals.
