31 July 2026
Anna Sewell House will be open to visitors from 10am until 2pm. This year, the second floor will be dedicated to Mary Sewell – Anna's mother, who was a prolific writer in her own right and whose own story and impact on literature has resulted in Anna Sewell House being shortlisted for the Everyday History Heroes competition this year! So, if you have visited Anna Sewell House before, be sure to join us for this special event.
Kirsty's Cakery, which is just two doors along from Anna Sewell House, will be open from 9.30am until 3.30pm. Visitors will be able to enjoy browsing through several copies of Black Beauty which will be on display, and also enjoy two special events, both of which are perfect to enjoy with a drink and a special Black Beauty themed cake!
At 11am there will be a reading from Black Beauty which will last approximately 30 minutes. It will be a lovely opportunity to sit back, relax and enjoy hearing an extract from the best-selling book that you might not have read for many years, or perhaps not yet read at all!
At 1pm there will be a talk about Mary Sewell, which is a great opportunity to learn more about this wonderful writer, her poetry, her philanthropy and of course the bond she had with her daughter Anna, who simply couldn’t have written Black Beauty without her mother’s help.
We’re really looking forward to this special collaboration on the first day of Heritage Open Days 2026 and hope lots of you will be able to join us.
