Why use low-noise fireworks?

Every year horses, dogs, cats and all the animals we love may struggle during the fireworks season. Percy, Sprite and Cinders (right) were three of our own horses who died as a result of fireworks being let off near a Redwings site - but their story is far from an isolated incident.

There have been more than 1,300 incidents of fireworks affecting horses recorded between 2021 and Jan 2026, including at least 28 fatalities

60% of owners say their dog has been negatively impacted by fireworks

64% of cat owners say their pet experiences stress symptoms during fireworks season

Let the professionals make the noise

We’d love to see only low-noise fireworks being used but if you feel you really can’t manage without the loud bang, please choose an organised display over hosting at home.

Before you go, check that the display is by a professional company and located well away from any nearby paddocks, farms, neighbouring houses or important wildlife habitats. Why not try a professional low-noise display to find out how good they can be?!

Myth: Fireworks only last a few minutes so it's not a big deal

Fact: Loud noises can cause stress and harm very quickly and some horses will be nervous for hours or even days afterwards.

Myth: People who want to restrict loud fireworks are killjoys

Fact: Many people dread Bonfire Night and New Year’s Eve because both animals and people can be at risk of real harm. Go Low isn’t about spoiling anyone’s fun, it’s about celebrating in ways that don’t cause distress, injury or even cost lives.

Myth: People could use silent fireworks

Fact: No firework is truly silent. Low-noise fireworks will still make some noise (around 70–90 decibels) but not the really loud bangs that so many animals and people struggle with.

Change is happening!

Low-noise displays are already on the rise across the UK with large organisations operating low-noise firework policies. Many wedding venues require no fireworks or low-noise fireworks, alongside many councils such as Cardiff, Sunderland City, and Hackney.

If you’re an organisation or pyrotechnician organising a display this year, why not Go Low to protect animals and position yourself as a low-noise leader?
