08 May 2024
Year of outbreak: 2023
Location: Devon
Horses infected: 3
A pony was brought onto our yard, with a streaming nose and cough, the owner just said it was a virus, it got in contact with my horse.
A week later my horse was not himself, stopped drinking and eating, he was lapping the water like a dog, most of it was coming back out his nose, vet immediately called, they took a swab. Because he could hydrate himself and he was getting worse as the minutes ticked by, he was transported to the local hospital where he spent 24hrs on IV fluids. He came home and straight into isolation. The pony that had arrived before had been taken from the yard again the week previous. All horses on the yard were scoped, and 3 including my boy were confirmed, our vets were incredible. 5 months later and many scopes and washout we have now been confirmed clear.
For my horse alone it cost me £4.5k, this could have been prevented.
