Head of Welfare and Behaviour

Nic has worked at Redwings since 1991, joining as a newly qualified vet from South Africa. As Head of Welfare and Behaviour, Nic’s extensive knowledge and experience is fundamental to our rescue work, in particular specialising in the rounding-up and subsequent rehabilitation and long-term care of feral, unhandled or mistreated horses. It is his expertise in this field that has spearheaded our approach to not only equine health and welfare, but equine behaviour and training too.

During rescues, Nic carries out clinical care and veterinary assessments of horses in need, as well as using his extensive knowledge of equine behaviour to coordinate round-ups in a way that cause as little stress as possible to the horses who need us.

As a Welfare vet he is also responsible for collating and cataloguing evidence that is crucial to ensuring justice, under the Animal Welfare Act, to those who have caused unnecessary suffering to the horses and donkeys so desperately in need of our help. Nic is also often called to be a witness in court.

Nic also has an extensive knowledge of the legal parameters that Redwings must work within. He has consulted on many areas of animal welfare policy, including working with the Welsh Government to draft the Control of Horses Act, which gave authorities the powers to tackle fly-grazing (grazing without a landowner’s permission) which often led to horses experiencing neglect and welfare issues. He then energised the commitment to an English equivalent, which became law in 2015.
