It is no overstatement that Anne is the anchor of the Welfare team, and the reason everything works as well as it does! She has worked in the Welfare team at Redwings for almost 20 years, starting as a Welfare Coordinator and making herself so useful she’s become the central cog in everything the team accomplish!

Collating evidence

Anne’s role sees her oversee our Welfare Support Line, provide support to the Field Officers, and be responsible to collating all the legal documentation we need when caring for horses that are subject to a prosecution under the Animal Welfare Act. Keeping accurate records of the care the horses receive at Redwings, known as boarding records, as well as working with our vets and the RSPCA to document evidence that may be used as part of the prosecution process, is key to ensuring that the justice is served for the suffering that these horses or donkeys may have endured.

Sharing expertise

As well as this, Anne coordinates training requests. The Redwings Welfare and Behaviour teams’ unique experience working with nervous and unhandled horses means that we receive requests for training and support from other welfare charities, such as The Brooke and other organisations such as Norfolk Fire and Rescue, as well as to support teams across Redwings. Anne coordinates and prepares these, meaning we can share our valuable expertise and help even more horses beyond our paddock fences.

The anchor in the storm

Throughout her time at Redwings, Anne has been an active part of the rescue team and has attended many rescue round-ups, but now more often uses that experience to remain as a central resource at Redwings HQ, providing all the support the team could possibly need. 

Anne said: “In the field during rescues, the situation is often ever-changing, and I know how challenging that can be. By staying at Redwings HQ I am only ever a phone-call away and can help coordinate extra resources, find out updated information and just generally make sure the team have everything they need.

“In 2024, there was one rescue that proved to be incredibly complex and took longer than we had first anticipated. The rescue team ended up needing to stay longer and crucially needed somewhere to sleep! Cue me frantically trying to find them all a bed for the night when all the local hotels were all booked up. But, whilst I worried about that, the team could focus on just what they needed to – saving the horses who desperately needed us.”
