A Shetland pony called Alfie has been offered a home here at Redwings after being found with a severe wound on his cheek, the result of a suspected dog bite.

Alfie, who is 15 years old, came to Redwings after his owner discovered him in his paddock with a nasty wound to his face and contacted us for help.

People who interact with horses often wish they could tell us how they feel. But by tuning into horses’ body language and facial expressions, we can discover a wealth of information that helps to indicate how positively or negatively a horse is feeling at that point in time.

Horses tend to communicate visually rather than verbally because it much safer for prey animals not to make noises that might draw unwanted attention. They are incredibly good at reading subtle signals given out by other horses, but that are very easy for humans to miss.

Adoption Star Reggie, member of The Gangsters, has recently recovered from a period of ill health that led to him making an emergency visit to Rossdales Equine Hospital in Newmarket.

It's eight weeks until Strangles Awareness Week (1st - 7th May) and yards, event venues and vet practices are being urged to encourage horse owners to make regular temperature checking a habit and minimise the scale and impact of an outbreak.
