About Redwings
Redwings was originally named by our founder, Wendy Valentine, and actually has no equine connection at all, being derived from the type of chickens that had been kept on the site where Redwings was established!
Redwings USA is an entirely separate organisation based in California. Their official name is Horse Power Sanctuaries but they chose to adopt the public name of ‘Redwings’ as a thank you to us after we worked with them to help with their fundraising and welfare programmes. Redwings was set up in 1984 as it was felt an organisation was needed to care for horses and ponies in the UK. This is our objective as registered with the Charity Commission and with over one million horses and ponies in the UK, we still have our work cut out 40 years on!
No, we don’t receive any Government funding – we are a registered charity and are entirely dependent on donations from the public to keep us running.
At Redwings, we are committed to exploring the potential of AI-powered productivity tools to see how these could enhance our day-to-day office operations and improve services for our supporters. Our approach to AI-powered productivity tools would include the use of generative artificial intelligence and machine learning within existing applications and platforms only where these could complement our current work to free up more time and resources for us to focus on rescuing and caring for horses and donkeys in need.
We are currently focused on creating a defined and documented approach for where AI-powered productivity tools might be appropriate at Redwings, and where that fits with our current Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and processes. We will only consider introducing AI-powered productivity tools where they can be used for the good of the charity and our staff and horses, specifically harnessing the power of our teams to work in new ways, reducing office-based/administrative operating costs, and
ensuring that we are functioning in the most efficient ways possible.
Please note: Any element of our work involving AI-powered productivity tools will always be checked by a human and if you call to speak to us or email us or contact us in any other way we promise you will always be speaking to a human being. We will be primarily using AI-powered productivity tools for internal purposes only and if we introduce any external usage, we will be transparent about this and will ensure that we comply with data protection and privacy standards.
Working for Redwings

The majority of our staff are paid for their work. This is primarily because they work directly with our rescued horses who can be dangerous or difficult to handle because of their traumatic pasts. Working with them needs lots of training and so it is very difficult to bring volunteers into that environment.
We offer volunteer roles at our visitor centres and at our headquarters. If you have a few hours to spare, are aged 18 or over and would like to make a real difference to a worthwhile cause, then volunteering at Redwings could be the perfect opportunity for you! You could be a welcoming Site Assistant, be a friendly face in our cafés or gift shops, or support our warehouse team with packing gift orders, especially in the run-up to Christmas!
