A party celebrating the birthday of Norfolk-born author Anna Sewell, writer of the classic novel Black Beauty, has raised almost £70 for Redwings.
Kirsty’s Cakery, based in Anna Sewell’s former home in Great Yarmouth, held the event on 30th March 2017, which included readings from Black Beauty and a chance for people to write down their own thoughts about the beloved book and stories about the history of the building.
Money was raised through a raffle and a Black Beauty quiz, and party-goers were also encouraged to donate lots of delicious carrots and apples for our rescued residents at our nearby Caldecott Visitor Centre to enjoy.
Owner Kirsty Fielder was inspired to raise funds for Redwings having sponsored our stunning Adoption Star Maya due to her striking resemblance to Black Beauty. Maya’s beautiful photo hangs proudly in the café for customers to see!
Kirsty said: “I don’t live too far from Redwings Caldecott and always enjoyed seeing the horses and going for a walk with the dog there. When I opened my business, I was looking for a charity to support and, with the connection to Anna Sewell and Black Beauty, Redwings seemed perfect!”
Kirsty, her staff and friends will also be heading to Maya’s birthday party at Redwings Aylsham on Sunday 14th May, and have even offered to donate some delicious cakes for the occasion! Everyone is invited to join in the celebrations from 11.30am.
This year marks the 140th anniversary of Black Beauty’s publication and we hope fans of the book will come along as a way to honour Anna Sewell and her passion for animal welfare… and, of course, our lovely Maya.
If Black Beauty is one of your favourite books, why not adopt Maya for yourself or as a gift for a loved one? You could also take inspiration from this special year – like Kirsty – to raise funds for Redwings and organise your own event. If so, make sure to let us know all about it by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org
