Redwings Oxhill’s Jay is a super model!

After spotting a photo of handsome Shire cross Jay (pictured above), who lives at Redwings Oxhill in Warwickshire, on Instagram, local equine artist Rebecca Judge set out to draw our lovely boy.

In order to create the beautiful piece, Rebecca starts by drawing a grid on the original photo and then draws the same grid onto her paper. She then begins to add as much shading as possible, before drawing even smaller grids onto her image to help her add the finer details.

The finished piece then comes to life as the layers of carefully added pencil marks build up and takes about 40 hours to complete. You can see the progress of the drawing below.

The incredible progress of Rebecca's fantastic piece.

Once finished, Rebecca came along to Redwings Oxhill where she met Jay and showed him his portrait – we think he was rather impressed, as are we! Rebecca also donated one of her equine prints which will go towards raising funds for the horses, ponies, donkeys and mules in our care nationwide.

Rebecca said: “It’s a labour of love and I enjoy it very much. Jay was great fun to draw, especially as I was able to add a little colour to show his pink muzzle! It was wonderful to be invited to come and meet him at Redwings and show him his portrait.”

Thank you to Rebecca for your drawing and kind donation!
