The perfect day to Speak Out On Strangles!

As part of Redwings' award-winning Stamp Out Strangles campaign, we’re organising a special Speak Out On Strangles Day to take place on Saturday 6th July 2019, and we’d like YOU to get involved!

From fun rides to tack sales, from games to picnics, we're urging as many livery yards as possible to host activities for their clients to raise awareness of good biosecurity and to help tackle the stigma still sadly associated with strangles - a highly infectious disease which has over 600 recorded outbreaks per year.  Find out more here - 'What is Strangles?'

It’s also the ideal opportunity for anyone who hasn’t already taken the Stamp Out Strangles Pledge to sign up and benefit from all the practical advice, ideas and resources that can help horses to steer clear of infectious disease. To date, almost 400 horse owners and 110 yard managers nationwide have taken the pledge!

Yards can sign up to take part in Speak Out On Strangles Day by emailing will receive a free goodie bag of resources to help promote their activity and support them on the day, plus all those who sign up will be automatically entered into a prize draw to win two free tickets to one of our favourite equestrian events, Your Horse Live at Stoneleigh Park, Warwickshire, in November!

We've also created a pack of digital resources, including posters and images, and ideas for games on the day! Just click on the links to download for free!

Individual horse owners not attached to a yard can also get involved! Why not show your support by downloading our free Pledge poster (above) – perfect for taking a selfie with and sharing on social media with the hashtag #SpeakOutOnStranglesDay. You can also share their experiences of strangles on our online Strangles Hub.

On the day, we'll also be hosting special activities at our visitor centres across the UK and the our Head of Welfare and Behaviour, and leading strangles expert, Nic de Brauwere, will be hosting a Facebook Live session where he will be answering burning questions about infectious disease prevention. You can send in your questions now by emailing

Andie Vilela, Education and Campaigns Manager, said: “In a recent survey, we discovered that negative attitudes towards strangles were a key barrier for yard managers and horse owners when it came to taking proactive preventative measures. With Speak Out On Strangles Day, we want to break down those barriers and show that such attitudes are a thing of the past! Better hygiene and screening practices are already becoming the norm and, with concerns around the equine flu not abating, the appetite is there within the equestrian community to do more to protect horses.

“This special day of action is designed to provide yard managers with the opportunity to have those positive conversations about better biosecurity or even introduce updated screening protocols to their clients in a fun and friendly way. Whatever activity they would like to host - whether it’s a relaxing hack or simply encouraging more people to join our campaign - it all helps to show that if everyone works together we can stamp out strangles.”

However you get involved, thank you for helping us Speak Out!
