Our stunning Adoption Star Maya, known as ‘Black Beauty’ for her striking looks and triumph over adversity, is inviting everyone to join her for a special birthday party on Sunday 14th May – just in time to celebrate the 140th anniversary of the famous book’s publication.
Like Black Beauty, who experienced hardships and cruelty at the hands of uncaring humans, Maya endured a harrowing start to her life before finding safety and happiness at Redwings.
The beautiful Friesian was rescued in 2010 with six other horses who had been found in terrible conditions on a site in Essex. One of their friends had even sadly passed away from neglect. Going without decent food and care for so long left Maya weak, anaemic and worm-ridden, and her muscles were simply wasting away.
Despite fears she would not survive, Maya made a full recovery and will be celebrating her 13th birthday with a party at Redwings Aylsham, on Sunday 14th May from 11.30am.
It’s hoped fans of the classic tale of Black Beauty and its Norfolk-born author Anna Sewell will join in the fun which starts with Maya being treated to a pampering groom. Maya will then get to parade in front of all her visitors and enjoy plenty of fuss and cuddles before tucking into her very own birthday cake.

After the party, strap on your walking boots and discover the rest of the visitor centre which is home to over 50 other rescued horses, ponies and donkeys who would love some extra attention too! There’s also nature ponds and wildlife walks to explore.
Then why not settle down to a hot drink and a tasty snack in our Nosebag Café? There’s also a gift shop offering a wide range of souvenirs with all proceeds supporting the 1,500 rescued horses, ponies, donkeys and mules in Redwings’ care nationwide.
Redwings Aylsham, north of Norwich, is open every Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday, 10am to 4pm (closed Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays). Entry is free and dogs on leads are welcome.
We hope you can celebrate with us!
