Bringing hope and changing lives, ten years on

Mildred and her foal Phyllis were among hundreds of ponies rescued from a single site in 2013. The number of animals suffering in appalling conditions demanded an enormous effort from everyone involved.

A scene of despair...

The request for help came from Vale of Glamorgan Trading Standards after discovering the ponies trying to survive in the most horrendous of conditions. Ponies were standing in deep mud, without fresh water or food and some showed clear signs of untreated injury.

A team of Redwings vets and handlers, working alongside local authorities, RSPCA, and local council staff, assessed hundreds of animals. Many of the ponies were undernourished, sick or suffering from a lack of veterinary care so were transported to safety for treatment and rehabilitation.

Redwings took in over 100 ponies – many of them mares carrying foals.

Last Christmas was the first in a new home for Mildred, with the companionship of a new friend in the care of one of our wonderful Redwings Guardians. Phyllis continues to lead a happy life in sanctuary care.
