We’re very sorry to have to share the incredibly sad news that retired Adoption Star Cauli has passed away. She was 17 years old.
Cauli retired from the Redwings Adoption Scheme in 2019, after being diagnosed with Equine Metabolic Syndrome (EMS) and Cushing’s Disease (PPID) – both of which made her prone to a painful hoof condition called laminitis.
Over the past few years, Cauli has spent a significant amount of time at our Horse Hospital, where she received the best possible care, as well as specialist shoeing.
Developments at Redwings Caldecott in recent years, in particular the construction of special care stables and surrounding woodchip paddocks, allowed her care to be managed on site by her wonderful carers in a way that would not have otherwise been possible.
Sadly, despite the best efforts of the team, Cauli’s condition deteriorated, and so she was given X-rays, which revealed some major and irreversible changes inside her hooves. It became obvious that the vets could no longer keep her comfortable and there were no more management options that could help her, so they had to make the heart-breaking decision to put her to sleep to ensure she did not suffer.
Lovely little Cauli was found heartlessly abandoned in a cauliflower field in 2008, alongside her friend who had sadly already passed away. She had a severe eye injury and was incredibly nervous. When she arrived at Redwings, she had surgery to remove her poorly eye. With plenty of love and care, she made a full recovery before joining the Adoption Scheme in 2014.
If you sponsor Cauli, you should have received a letter explaining what happens to your adoption. We will move your sponsorship to another Adoption Star automatically, but if there’s an Adoption Star you would particularly prefer, or if you have yet to receive your letter in the post, then please let our team know by calling 01508 481000 or by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org.
Everyone at Redwings is truly devastated by the loss of this sweet girl, and we know this will be felt greatly by her supporters too. In tribute, we have set up a memorial fund in her name, to provide care to the next generation of horses and ponies who require extra special care for laminitis. You can leave a donation below or call 01508 481000 if you would like to contribute.
RIP Cauli. We’ll never forget you.
