Sanctuaries

Redwings receives more than 1,200 enquiries each year from owners wanting to secure a place for their horse(s) at the Sanctuary and other equine sanctuaries receive a similar number of requests. Whilst sanctuary life would the first option for many owners looking to rehome a retired horse, it is simply not possible for this number of equines to be admitted to sanctuaries, which are invariably full.

Horse owners should also bear in mind that sanctuaries are normally funded entirely from donations and support from members of the public. People who give to animal sanctuaries do so because they want to support the rescue and rehabilitation of equines who have suffered abuse and neglect.

To ask a charity to use its’ funds to care for horses from good homes that are simply unwanted once they have been retired needs to be thought about carefully. Many of the larger sanctuaries will investigate applications for places from people who find themselves in exceptional circumstances which affect their ability to provide for a horse and may be able to offer places when they become available.

If you still feel you would like to look at the sanctuary option in more detail, you need to contact individual organisations for information on their entry criteria and capacity. To find contact details for many of the larger charities and sanctuaries in the UK, you can look at the website of the National Equine Welfare Council at www.newc.co.uk and go to their members page.
