The next step - Retirement or re-homing

The vast majority of young, unhandled horses and ponies that come into our care are successfully rehabilitated and referred to our re-homing team. Occasionally, they may show that they have a physical condition (such as slight but recurrent lameness) which makes them unsuited to life as a working animal. But with their now exemplary manners (of course!) they can make wonderful non-ridden companions on our Guardianship scheme and are still able to give pleasure and enjoy life in a private loan home. You can find more information at Redwings Guardianship Scheme.

Horses learn quickly and negative experiences may stay with them for life. This means that even with the very best in rehabilitation, some of our abused rescue cases do not entirely put their past behind them and will never be straightforward to handle. These very special equines will stay at the Sanctuary for the rest of their days, where we know they will be in the safe hands of our patient staff and they can simply enjoy life again in the company of other equines. You can find more information in our Sanctuary section.
