Animal Welfare Bill progressesRedwings was delighted to attend an MPs’ evening reception in the House of Commons last month. The reception, which took place on October 18, coincided with the recent presentation of the new Animal Welfare Bill to the Commons where it will be debated before being passed to the House of Lords. The Bill has been written to replace existing animal welfare legislation, most of which dates back to 1911. Redwings, along with other active welfare organisations, know the restrictions of these laws only too well as it works to improve the lives of neglected equines all over the country. The reception was attended by MPs from the three main political parties and addressed by DEFRA minister Ben Bradshaw, who was himself brought up in rural Norfolk and worked for the Eastern Daily Press during the mid-1980s. Although representatives from a wide variety of animal welfare groups attended the evening, only six had the opportunity to exhibit images and give out literature. Redwings veterinary surgeon Nicolas de Brauwere and communications manager Helen Whitelegg manned a stand with Elaine Cannon and Martin Taggart of the National Equine Welfare Council. Redwings has been an active member of NEWC for several years and through them has worked hard to support and shape the much needed changes which the Animal Welfare Bill will bring about.
