Tinies take over at StonhamThree lovely foals and their families have arrived at Stonham ready to meet their adoring public! In fact, our Stonham centre in Suffolk has recently received not one, not two but twelve Shetland ponies – including the three foals. The mares and foals were a part of a large Lincolnshire rescue and are now healthy and happy so they can enjoy a new life at Stonham for the general public to meet and pat. The twelve ponies, who range from 24 to 44 inches high, include five-month old Isaac (aka Zac) who was in the local press a week or so after his birth pictured meeting Strawberry the towering 64 inch high Shire horse. The group also includes foal Moses and mum Ruth, foal Samuel and mum Miriam, Zac’s mum Eve, Rebecca who sadly lost her foal, mum Sagaloo and her foals Dhansak and Bombay and last but not least Samosa and her mum Peshwari.
"Zac, his mum and all the Miniature Shetlands have done really well," explained press officer Nicola Markwell. "They have been through our thorough vetting and settling in process, and they are all in excellent health so it was time for them to trot along to Stonham to become part of the friendly equines that live there for the public to get to know. They are all really friendly and love a fuss, so we know everyone from the granddads to the toddlers will adore them." All the ponies arrived together and Nicola admits that the Centre was a little chaotic for an hour or so. "Like young children, the foals are into everything and were rather excitable until they settled into the important task of munching grass!" It seems that all the foals are adapting to life at Redwings very well. "They play all day but they are starting to learn to be handled, and will wear a head collar and be led though Zac in particular is still cheeky," explains Nicola. "He has had his first foot trim even though the farrier had a tricky task as his feet are so tiny." But a few months on, little Zac seems to know he has had the star treatment, having appeared in several local newspapers, equine magazines and even the front cover of children’s animal favourite magazine Animals & You. "He is very quick to get the fuss before the others,” concludes Nicola, “and people are already asking us which is Zac. He may be small but he has already won a big fan base!"
Zac and his friends can be found at our Stonham Rescue Centre, near Stowmarket every day from 10 am to 5 pm until 29th of October. Entry is free. For more information on how to visit, call 0870 040 0033 or go to the Visit Us pages of this site. We hope to see you soon! |
