The Year of Equine Welfare

Redwings 2005 New Year's Resolution was to establish a special care centre for our donkeys and ponies who need extra care. This Autumn we moved the majority of our donkey residents together with some special horses and ponies (and one mule!) onto our new special care centre just three miles from our Hapton HQ and equine hospital. Thank you for helping us achieve our 2005 New Year's Resolution - we could not have set up the centre without your support.

Bella the donkey says Hello

So, what's our resolution for 2006?

Quite simply, we hope to make 2006 the Year of Equine Welfare.

Equine welfare is at the heart of Redwings' existence. Our experienced welfare team works to help improve the quality of life for equines on a nationwide level and with your help we hope to make 2006 The Year of Equine Welfare.

The charity has a comprehensive equine welfare network in Britain, with around 100 trained Equine Welfare Advisers located strategically across the UK. These dedicated volunteers can investigate any reports of cruelty or neglect received by our welfare office and if necessary advice can be offered, or where appropriate more drastic steps can be taken. It is vital that Redwings always works within the boundaries of the law - sometimes this can be very frustrating and can make it very difficult to achieve the desired result.

However, new developments are taking place in equine welfare, the Animal Welfare Bill is moving forward and the National Equine Welfare Council recently published their new compendium setting out the minimum standards of care required to look after a horse, pony, donkey or mule. To download a copy of these guidelines, visit www.newc.co.uk.

Our resolution may sound rather grand, but we are not intending to do it alone. As the UK's largest horse charity, we are a leading member of the National Equine Welfare Council and we will be working with other charities that are also dedicated to nationwide equine welfare to improve the lives of horses, ponies, donkeys and mules across the UK in 2006.

Thank you and a very Happy New Year from all at Redwings.
