Paul O'Grady's Pony Tale! Two very special ponies from Redwings rubbed shoulders with celebrities on Tuesday 24 April when they were invited to join the set of Channel Four’s The New Paul O’Grady Show (5pm).Pretty Lulu and cheeky Samson – VIPs (Very Important Ponies) for the afternoon - had a very comfortable trip to London in a horsebox and had a whale of a time as they were treated to much fuss and adoration by the crew and presenter Paul O’Grady.
Samson was invited to be a ‘mane attraction’ whilst Lulu went along to make sure he had a horsey buddy to keep him company, but they loved Lulu so much that she was asked to appear on screen too! The decision to take the Miniature Shetlands was made as both are extremely happy to travel and meet new people, and Redwings knew that Lulu and Samson’s attendance would raise the profile of both the charity and the guardianship scheme. Both ponies are seeking new homes as companions, as are a number of other Miniature Shetlands.
Samson was found abandoned with his mother who had been left tied to a fence by rope that had been cutting into her flesh for some time, causing a nasty wound. Both were hungry and very frightened.
10-year old Lulu was rescued in 2004 as part of a huge rescue operation where 72 ponies were removed from the land where they had been running wild. The ponies were covered in lice, had worms and untrimmed feet and, as stallions and mares were running together, there were many pregnant mares and foals in the group. Lulu already had a foal – at Redwings and called Bombay – but was also pregnant and Dhansak arrived shortly after her arrival at Redwings. (All three were named after types of Indian food and Lulu is actually called Sagaloo!) “We considered the invitation to go on the show carefully,“ explains Press Officer Nicola Markwell. “We decided to go if we had a couple of ponies who we knew would love the attention and enjoy the day, which both Lulu and Samson did. They had a great journey, lots of people to meet and Paul O’Grady loved them. It was a brilliant opportunity to spread the word about Redwings to many people who may not have heard of us, which will help us help the equines who need us.”
