Giving foals the New Start they deserve

Thanks to your support, Redwings was able to help eleven foals in 2007 including Angel, a beautiful bay foal who was able to get the special care she needed and is now making wonderful progress.

A few months ago Redwings rescued a large group of Welsh ponies from a field near Birmingham. The rescued ponies were all in need of treatment, one of the mares was heavily pregnant, another had a foal at foot and a third foal had stopped taking his mother’s milk

Angel’s story – Angel was only a tiny foal when her group was rescued and brought to Redwings. Angel and her mum Monique were taken to be near our Vet Centre as we knew they were not in good health. Monique had liver damage and when we checked we found that little Angel not only had severe diarrhoea but was suffering from liver trouble too – which is very unusual in a foal so young. We have now started a programme of treatment to get both mum and her cute foal back to full health.

Jaffa’s story – The 11 ponies we rescued soon became 12 as Cookie was heavily pregnant with Jaffa – who was born at Redwings at the end of October. On arrival at Redwings, mum Cookie had terrible diarrhoea and it was clear she was going to need extra treatment. Soon after Jaffa was born she also developed mastitis. Cookie needed expensive tests, a course of antibiotics and a special diet to boost the protection she was giving Jaffa through her milk. Mum is now on the mend and Jaffa is a happy, healthy foal.

Redwings has rescued and rehabilitated many foals over the years. In time we hope both Jaffa and Angel will be able to lead a happy new life with a family through our Guardianship Scheme and with your help we can give many more foals the new start they deserve in 2008.
