Soap star Kate pays us a visit!A little bit of Weatherfield came to Norfolk on Friday August 12th, when Tracy Barlow took a break from the Street and Steve McDonald to visit her retired childhood pony, Roxy.A horse lover since she was a little girl, Coronation Street actress Kate Ford owned 35-year-old Roxy for sixteen years. Since then, Roxy has needed specialist care as she suffers with various equine aliments linked to old age, and the 14.1hh liver chestnut mare was accepted into the Sanctuary as a special retirement case. In fact, Roxy’s age falls within the top 1% of veteran horses at Redwings. Acting chief executive Lynn Cutress explained why Roxy needed special care. “At 35, Roxy is a rather elderly lady and whilst she does go about her day-to-day life perfectly happily and comfortably, she suffers with ailments in the same way that elderly humans might. Arthritis is common with older ponies, as are respiratory problems and Roxy also has trouble with her feet. Roxy is old for a pony, but she’s happy and has expert care ‘on hoof’ to keep her comfortable. She’s a lovely pony and is enjoying her days here at Redwings along with our other 1,100 horses, ponies, donkeys and mules.” Kate, who has played Tracy Barlow since December 2002, was delighted to see Roxy again: “Roxy and I had lots of fun when we were both younger, show jumping and competing in cross country, and I am so pleased that she is here and in such good hands. Not all the horses at Redwings have had such a good life and some have come here as they were ill-treated, neglected or abandoned. I am very supportive of the good work that Redwings carries out.” >back |
