Help us to help more horses this Christmas

Please support our Christmas appeal to raise vital funds to purchase an arthroscope. This specialised piece of equipment will mean we can help more horses with permanent and crippling lameness...like little Io.

Io - pronounced I-O - is now a healthy, happy four-year-old Miniature Shetland pony, but despite her youth she has already been through more than any pony should have to endure.

Io, a very special little Shetland

Tiny Io was born at Redwings in 2002 after her mum Demeter was rescued when she was in foal, with a large herd from Devon. The group had been running wild and had interbred and as a result, many of the foals were suffering from birth defects like lameness and breathing problems.

Io was a particularly extreme example and until recently, she was in intense pain with lameness caused by osteoarthritis. She had to be checked and receive pain-killing anti-inflammatory drugs every day to keep her condition under control, until finally we were able to send her to a specialist vet unit in Newmarket to undergo an operation.

Now, for the first time in her life, Io is free from pain and able to move about freely and play and interact as part of our Redwings herd.

Io greets her friend Toby

However, the operation - to fuse the joints in her hock (a surgical arthrodesia) - was expensive and very complicated and required little Io to travel a long way in order to receive the treatment she needed. Now we hope to raise sufficient funds to purchase the necessary equipment to be able to perform the procedure in our own Horse Hospital in Norfolk, and at a fraction of the cost.

Senior Veterinary Surgeon Nicky Jarvis says: "With our own arthroscope we will be able to diagnose and treat cases like Io's much faster and much more economically. That essentially means we will be able to help more of the horses in our care to live long, happy and pain-free lives - what a wonderful Christmas present that would be!"

Redwings receives no government funding and relies entirely on public donation. It is only with your help that we can continue to care for our rescued residents and help more ponies like little Io.
