Redwings ponies do us proud!Three rescued ponies are making the most of their new lives through the Redwings Guardianship Scheme. Two ponies and their guardians enjoyed success at shows around East Anglia recently, with Bluebe causing a stir at the Gayton Thorpe Riding Club Show in Norfolk and Harrier taking Reserve Champion at the Melbourn show at Cottenham near Cambridge. Harrier and his guardian Lydia came first in the Ridden and Mountain and Moorland competitions at Cottenham, taking the title of Reserve Champion overall after receiving two first and two second placings to qualify. The judges were very impressed with little Harrier and his fantastic guardian in his first major competition, where he behaved like a true professional!
The success is doubly impressive as Harrier was a rescue pony who used to be extremely nervous and headshy. His head issues are now totally resolved and he even loves having his ears scratched by his guardian family! Re-homing manager Emma Lacey said: "The transformation is quite incredible. From a nervous, shy little pony Harrier has really found his feet and is growing in confidence by the day. We are so proud of him and his wonderful guardian! This is testament to the re-homing team’s sympathetic approach to training and the continuation and progression of this training with his Guardian." Meanwhile little Bluebe and her guardian Jessica received prizes for the Best Turned Out pony and came first in the Ridden contest at the Gayton Thorpe Riding Club Show in Norfolk. Bluebe was also a rescued pony who has thrived in a Guardian home and is bringing lots of joy to her young guardian.
A few weeks ago we were delighted at the news that guardian Emily Brady won the Pony Club Dengie Winter League National Championships on her pony 'Frisky Flicka'. Flicka was originally rescued by the RSPCA in very poor condition and with a severe worm burden. She made a wonderful recovery and has been on loan to Emily from the Redwings Ada Cole Rescue Centre for five years. Emily and Flicka have made a wonderful partnership, winning a number of other competitions, regularly qualifying for BSJA events and even appearing in Horse and Hound! The Redwings Guardianship Scheme has been running since 2005 and following a merger with the Ada Cole Memorial Stables we currently have more than 500 horses and ponies living with Guardians across the UK. While some have gone on to compete in shows, many others have simply become part of the family! However, we still have quite a number looking for homes, including a large number of companion ponies and particularly some very cute miniature Shetlands! The ponies always remain in the ownership of Redwings and we check on them every six months to make sure they are happy in their home. We look for responsible Guardians who can offer enough land, suitable facilities and the high level of time and care that ponies require on a daily basis. As many of our horsey residents have had difficult or traumatic past experiences they all have handling training to ensure they are comfortable to go out into the big wide world and any ponies that do not take to the training process can stay in the care of the Sanctuary for the rest of their days. If you would like to know more about how to re-home a Redwings horse or pony, follow the link below to the Guardianship Scheme pages of this site, where you can view the ponies we have available and even apply online. Please note that we can currently only consider homes in the South East of England. > Redwings Guardianship Scheme |
