Double helping of coverage on the BBCRedwings' Head of Welfare Nicolas De Brauwere appeared on BBC1 last week as part of a feature on Animals 24/7 (Tuesday 7th Nov) about the Appleby Horse Fair.Nicolas is one of Redwings' most senior veterinary surgeons and a member of the management board of the National Equine Welfare Council. He was asked to attend the horse fair back in June by the RSPCA to monitor and where necessary treat equines involved in the event, held in Cumbria each year. Thousands of people descend on the small town for the Fair, which is a very important cultural event for the UK and Ireland travelling community but also attracts crowds of spectators who come along to watch the horses being paraded around the town. The large numbers of horses at the fair and the popular tradition of ‘flashing’ (racing horses in trot along the road to show them off), means that there will inevitably be some horses that require veterinary attention. In recent years there has been a concerted effort by the RSPCA to improve facilities for and welfare of the horses at the fair and there are always several inspectors to monitor proceedings and give advice if necessary. This year, in addition to the vet who attends regularly, Nicolas was on hand to help the RSPCA Officers monitor the horses’ welfare and give treatment where needed. More information about our involvement at Appleby can be found on the Welfare pages of this site. Animal 24/7 is shown on BBC1 daily at 9.15am.
Meanwhile, our very own Jimmy the donkey made an appearance on BBC2’s Castle in the Country on Friday November 10th with presenter John Craven. The BBC Scotland team came to Redwings back in May to do some filming for the show, and Jimmy proved to be a real professional and is rumoured - amongst the other donkeys admittedly - to be fending off numerous 'offers' to have his own show, on the grounds that life here at Redwings is just too good! The 'Jimmy' episode was shown on Friday at 3.15pm. Read more about John Craven’s visit to Redwings by following this link >>>>
