Tiny Dinky makes a big impressionAfter a very sad start in life, one little Welsh pony is making up for lost time at Redwings. When he was still only a young pony, Dinky was bought by someone new to horse ownership who had been advised that a pony would be easier to look after than a dog because you don’t need to take them for walks. Not only did Dinky’s new owner misunderstand the need for exercise and freedom for such a young pony, they didn’t appreciate what horse care really involves and things predictably didn’t go well. Dinky did not get the basic care he needed such as routine vaccinations and vet care; he was also kept on a tether next to a car park and got loose twice, only to be found wandering along a busy road. After his second escape, a local horse safety group got involved and asked Redwings' Field Officer in the area to talk to the owner about concerns over Dinky’s welfare. Fortunately, illustrating that it is always worth being honest about your abilities when it comes to horse ownership, Dinky's owner admitted that he had made a mistake and did not have the time or knowledge to care for Dinky properly.
Re-homing Dinky was not going to be straightforward because he was a bit of a handful and although he was sold as a gelding (a male that has had an operation so that he can't breed with mares) he was still acting more like a stallion. Redwings was happy to offer Dinky a home so that he could have some investigations to find out if he was still a stallion and some handling training, treatments and TLC at the same time. As it turned out, he wasn't a gelding at all - but he is now! Dinky’s other main problem soon became apparent. Upon arrival at our Reception Centre, staff found that Dinky had a serious problem with parasitic worms. As soon as the team gave him routine de-wormer, red worms appeared in his droppings in very large quantities, which could have caused this lovely pony serious internal damage if left to continue. All being well, Dinky should make a wonderful family pony when he is a little older and we hope to re-home him through our Guardian Scheme. However, for the meantime he is certainly making up for lost time and charming the socks off all the staff here!
