Claudia braves the cold to help Redwings

A horse lover from Hertfordshire has just returned from an amazing expedition dog sledding in the Arctic Circle, which raised £4600 for Redwings Ada Cole Rescue Stables.

Claudia Oliver, who is a keen horsewoman and works as a banker in London, took part in a charity challenge organised by the open charity event organiser Across the Divide. The 200km trek began in the Norwegian village of Alta and went through the wilds of Norway, with the group covering a daily journey of thirty to fifty kilometres.

Claudia's group consisted of twelve fundraisers, one doctor and two guides, each of whom had their own sled pulled by four to six huskies. Everybody had to look after their huskies and slept in lodges with very basic amenities - no toilets or showers!

Claudia had to constantly assist her team of huskies to keep the sled in motion by pushing it and running alongside it on every uphill slope, very often through knee deep snow. "The temperatures we had to endure ranged between -15C and, during the last two days, -36C. Accommodation was basic and after a long day of travel the work had only just begun for the team as we had to look after sixty-two dogs, find water and prepare our quarters," explained Claudia.

"This was definitely by far the hardest thing I have ever done, but given the chance I would go back tomorrow. I am thrilled to not only have taken part but also to have supported Redwings Ada Cole Rescue Stables - a cause I strongly believe in."

Lynn Cutress, chief executive of Redwings, was delighted with Claudia's fundraising efforts. "Claudia has taken part in an incredible trip and raised a fabulous amount of money for needy horses. We are really proud of all our fundraisers who do all sorts of things to help our equines, but this incredible trip is one of the most unusual things that someone has done!"
