April's no fool!Despite being born on April 1, one special Redwings resident is no April Fool. Named after the month of her birth, April has lived at Redwings since she was a foal, and her best friend is adoption favourite Muffin the mule!April’s mother Pearl was rescued back in 1988 while in foal, and shortly afterwards April was born. As the little foal (pictured below) was full of the joys of spring she was named after the month of her birth.
At the same time another foal, Muffin - who is very cheeky-looking mule - came to the sanctuary when he and his mother were rescued from a horse auction when Muffin was just a few days old. April and Muffin met, and have been inseparable ever since. Muffin is extremely well known at Redwings, as he is one of our adoption equines. He gets many visitors on open days, and he is always first in line for a bit of fuss and attention!
Although Redwings launched a re-homing scheme last year, both April and Muffin will never leave the sanctuary and are free to enjoy all their days in the safe haven of Redwings. April will stay at Redwings because, apart from being Muffin’s soulmate, she has Degenerative Joint Disease – with similar symptoms to arthritis – and she needs expert care. Muffin and April will both be celebrating their eighteenth birthdays next month and April's carers are sure that she gets more speckled each year! It’s really easy to remember when April was born so there’s no risk that her extra carrot and fuss will be overlooked – in fact, she is sure to get extra attention and no doubt a special nuzzle from her best friend Muffin. Muffin's birthday is on April 14 and we will be holding a party for him on Sunday, April 23 so that all his adopters can celebrate his special day - and no doubt April will enjoy her fair share of attention too!
