To provide and promote the welfare, care and protection of horses ponies, donkeys and, mules

A big welcome to Ada Cole

We are delighted to announce that we have merged with the Ada Cole Rescue Stables in Essex, creating our fourth visitor centre. From now on this centre will be known as The Redwings Ada Cole Rescue Stables. We would like to take this opportunity to welcome Ada Cole into the Redwings family.

To find out more about Ada Cole, read on:

Ada Cole was a pioneer in her struggle for equine justice. She worked tirelessly and her campaigning resulted in legislation to stop the exportation of live horses for the continental meat trade. Following her death in 1930, Ada Cole Rescue Stables was established as a memorial which would ensure that her invaluable work continued.

Originally, the Charity opened its gates in 1932. Since 1961 its home has been at Broadlands near Nazeing in Essex.

The Charity’s mission has always been to rescue, rehabilitate and rehome horses, ponies, donkeys and mules. Broadlands is home to up to 60 horses at any one time but is not a retirement home. Other than a number of permanent residents who cannot be rehomed, the majority are looking for a caring foster home.

Rescued animals are initially housed in a quarantine stable block and receive veterinary attention. When well enough to be removed, they are transferred to the stable yards or one of the paddocks which make up the 45 acres of pasture.

Following rehabilitation, the Charity then aim to find permanent, caring foster homes for rescues through a loan agreement scheme. Homes must be approved and supervised by the Charity and are subject to regular checks to ensure that they continue to meet the high standards of care.

Broadlands Visitor Centre itself has an attractive paddock walk, along which visitors can take a relaxing stroll. In addition to the horses, visitors can expect to meet waterfowl, goats, pigs and the odd rescued sheep along the way.

There is also a gift shop and light refreshments are available.
