Redwings hosts 'first of many' seminars
Redwings Horse Sanctuary has begun a series of seminars aimed at helping yard owners, managers and horse owners to understand and prevent the spread of strangles.
On Wednesday 3rd September we invited horse owners and yard managers from across Norfolk to attend an evening seminar at our headquarters in Hapton, south of Norwich.
The evening included a presentation about strangles from resident senior veterinary surgeon Nicolas De Brauwere, who has run a successful screening program here at the sanctuary for 15 years. Attendees were shown how to set up a quarantine area at their own yards; they then had the opportunity to ask any questions about protecting their equines or businesses, and each delegate took away sample quarantine posters, FAQs and a strangles management checklist to help them stay prepared.

The evening generated such a positive response that the Redwings Welfare team now hope to offer more seminars and also take the event ‘on the road’ to help those who own horses or run equine businesses across East Anglia and beyond.
Redwings Senior Veterinary Surgeon Nicolas De Brauwere said: “There are too many myths and old wives’ tales that circulate about strangles, and unfortunately people are often too ashamed or anxious to own up and ask for help when strangles strikes."
"We aim to prepare yard owners and horse carers both on how to avoid an outbreak in the first place and how to deal with it effectively, should an outbreak occur. This way we can protect our local horse population and relieve some of the stigma at the same time. The response from our initial seminar was very positive and we hope it will prove to be the first of many.”
If your yard or equestrian centre would like to host a seminar or you are interested in attending future sessions at Redwings, contact the team on 01508 481008 or email welfare@redwings.co.uk to register your interest.
