Sad loss of adoption favourite

We are very sorry to have to tell you that adoption Darcey sadly passed away on 14th December 2011. She was 12 years old.

Over the past few years Darcey has developed quite profound arthritis in her knees and stiffness in her hind legs, partly as a result of her poor conformation (leg shape) and also from her traumatic past. Before her rescue Darcey was used by drug smugglers to transport their goods illegally across the English Channel in her trailer, which meant she spent a lot of time travelling when she was only a young filly. This took its toll on her physically and she has always had problems with her front legs in particular.

This year she has struggled on and off with lameness issues and as a result, we retired Darcey from the adoption scheme in the Summer and moved her to our Hapton HQ so she could be close to our vet team.

Darcey will be greatly missed

Darcey spent a happy Summer living out in a field at Hapton with her best friend Stealer but in recent weeks she suffered another severe attack of lameness and despite a long period of rest in a stable, she just did not recover properly. We could not keep her completely comfortable even with medication, and in the end our vet team had no choice but to put Darcey to sleep to ensure she did not suffer.

We are so sorry to bring you such sad news, especially so close to Christmas. Darcey was a real favourite amongst our visitors and staff alike. It is particularly sad to lose her at such a young age but this is not altogether unexpected as Darcey had such a terrible time in her early years, and we are just glad that we were able to give her a happy home here at Redwings for so long. Thank you to everyone who helped support her through our adoption scheme.

If you would like to donate to Darcey's Memorial Fund or send us your messages, please drop us a line to info@redwings.co.uk or telephone 01508 481010. Thank you.
