Amigo recovers at Redwings

A pony originally rescued by the RSPCA after he was abandoned on an old colliery site in Wakefield is now in the care of Redwings in Norfolk.

Three-year-old Amigo, as he has been named, was originally found by a member of the public back in June while she was out walking her dog. She called the RSPCA and managed to get him back to her stable yard until an inspector arrived. The 12hh piebald pony was suffering from liver damage; this had caused severe damage to his skin, which was was peeling and sore. He was in desperate need of veterinary attention and was barely able to stand up unaided.

RSPCA Inspector Sally Wren said: “This horse was in a dire condition and had he not been found when he was it doesn’t bear thinking about what would have happened.”

A vet was called and he was put on a drip and given vitamin injections. After time spent in a boarding establishment the RSPCA approached Redwings Horse Sanctuary to offer him a permanent home.

Redwings Welfare Vet Nicola Berryman said: “Amigo is making good progress but his condition is still severe. The damage to his liver could have been caused by consuming ragwort although the results of a biopsy did not confirm this; however he has suffered some form of plant or drug poisoning or has contracted an infection which has had a major impact on his liver function.”

“He was extremely ill when he was found and it is shocking that anyone could abandon a pony in this state. Despite what he has been through, Amigo is a really bright, happy pony and we are hopeful that he will recover fully and be able to live a happy and secure life in our care.”

Lovely Amigo is charming all the staff at Redwings!
