New Forest Pony (929KB)
Don't be fooled by the name; the 'New' Forest was given its title almost 1,000 years ago! William the Conqueror wanted to preserve the area as a royal forest but local people were allowed to carry on grazing their livestock in the forest too.

Questions (35KB)
Questions about native horses

Shetland Pony (929KB)
These tough ponies come from a group of islands that are the most northerly part of Britain.

Shire (615KB)
The Shire horse was named after the 'Shire' counties of the Midlands where the breed was developed. Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire and Warwickshire are just three of these counties.

Suffolk Punch (553KB)
The Suffolk Punch is one of the most easily recognised breeds because it only comes in one colour! This is a reddy-brown colour called 'chestnut'.
