Welfare

Dinky

Dear little Welsh pony Dinky had a very shaky start in life. He was bought by someone who had been advised that a pony would be easier to look after than a dog because you don’t need to take them for walks! Not really a good reason for getting one!

Pretty Welsh pony Dinky shortly after arriving at Redwings.

Dinky might look irresistible, but taking on a pony needs some serious thinking through!

Sadly, Dinky’s new owner had no idea what looking after a pony really involved and things didn’t go well. Not only did Dinky not get the basic care he needed, he was kept on a tether next to a car park and escaped twice, to be found wandering along the road. After his second escape, a local horse safety group got involved and asked Redwings Field Officer in the area to talk to the owner about concerns over Dinky’s welfare. His owner admitted that he had made a mistake and did not have the time or knowledge to care for Dinky properly.

Large redworms are clearly visible in Dinky's dung.

Dinky had a serious problem with parasitic worms. As soon as we gave him routine de-wormer, redworms appeared in his droppings in large quantities.

Re-homing Dinky was not going to be straightforward because he was a bit of a handful and although he was sold as a gelding (a male that has had an operation so that he can't breed with mares) he was still acting more like a stallion. Redwings was happy to offer Dinky a home so that he could have another operation to see what was going on in his private area! As it turned out, he wasn't a gelding at all. But he is now!

All being well, Dinky should make a wonderful family pony when he is a little older. He is certainly charming the socks off all the staff at Redwings!
